He proudly showed all of the car's unique features including its new wrap around windshield...first time for Buick. I was so impressed at how great Ron looked getting into that car, especially in his Navy uniform. Later when he was working for Ford Motor Company , Ron would bring home new cars as part of Ford's advertising. I remember helping his brothers push a new "noisy" Ford Cobra up the drive one evening to avoid disturbing his neighbors. Another time Ron took us for a ride in a new Ford Galaxy that had three carburetors and lots of power. Especially for a kid my age, Ron was a great model of achievement and kindness.
But it was a senator from Wisconsin, Democrat Gaylord Nelson, who had the idea that would become Earth Day. Nelson had long been concerned about the environment when a massive offshore oil spill sent millions of gallons onto the Southern California coast in 1969. Nelson, after touring the spill site, had the idea of doing a national “teach-in” on the environment, similar to teach-ins being held on some college campuses at the time to oppose the war in Vietnam. She commends the new White House strategy, but says access to health care is still a huge barrier to overcome for many folks seeking mental health treatment.

Gloria was blessed with a long life and will be missed. Sincere condolences are sent to the family and comfort fromGod, the Father of tender mercies. She patiently took photos with participants and listened to many reminiscing fans of Dennis the Menace TV show. Jeannie Russell also attended and accompanied Gloria.
